Leaving a broken car in Mexico?
Hey,
Three days ago, I drove a ´´85 Volkswagen Vanagon into Mexico from the US.Of course I went through all the legal stuff at customs, including leaving my credit card information there.
Two days ago, the car broke down-the motor is beyond repair and there seems to be no affordable way to get a new motor for that type van.
I am travelling south, to continue to Guatemala and am thinking about leaving the van in Mexico.
Does anyone know, if that is legally possible, or if there is any way to do it?
Thanks
Milena
We had a similar problem. First Oswald is essentially correct.
You need to prove the car was unrepairable and “donate it to the Mexican Government.” There is a great deal of paperwork involved and the paperwork needs to be sent to the correct office in Mexico City. It will take several months to clear the car from your passport. You can’t drive back into Mexico with a different car on your passport until the van is cleared. You can only temporarily import one car at a time. You might try a customs broker and see if they can speed up the process.
I have also heard, somewhat tongue in cheek, that you can bring the windshield with the sticker attached and the paperwork across the border and have it and legally removed and the vehicle removed from the record. I don’t know if it is true.
